Milan Fashion Week got underway on Wednesday (February 19) with a message of solidarity and unity with China.

Three fashion shows have been cancelled with designers either unable to finish their collections on time or travel to Italy’s financial capital for the 6-day event, said President of the Italian Chamber of Fashion, Carlo Capasa.

Shows and events would be streamed online on Chinese platforms for buyers, clients and fashion fans there under the umbrella project titled “We are With China”, Capasa explained.

He also called on the Italian government to help small and medium size businesses struggling with a lack of revenue from Chinese consumers.

Milan Fashion Week, which features shows from luxury brands including Gucci, Fendi, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Giorgio Armani, runs through Monday February 24.

The death toll from the coronavirus in mainland China passed 2,000 but the number of new cases there fell for a second straight day, offering a sliver of hope and helping Asian shares and U.S. stock futures rise.

China, the world’s second-largest economy, is struggling to get its manufacturing sector back on track after imposing severe travel restrictions to contain a virus that emerged in the central province of Hubei late last year.
