Water cannons, tear gas fired as Lebanon protests new government

Security forces fired water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters in Beirut. Demonstrators rallied near parliament in the early hours to protest against Lebanon’s new government, and were seen throwing stones and blasting gas from fire extinguishers to dismantle newly erected barricades. Lebanon formed its new government under Prime Minister Hassan Diab, after the Shi’ite group Hezbollah and its allies agreed on a cabinet that must urgently address an economic crisis. But unimpressed protesters took to the streets of the Lebanese capital as the government was announced.
