Nadal into second round but Sharapova goes out

Rafa Nadal hit the ground running by hammering unseeded Bolivian Hugo Dellien 6-2 6-3 6-0 to reach the second round of the Australian Open. The top seeded Spaniard has never lost to a player ranked as low as world number 72 Dellien at the year’s first Grand Slam and was never in danger on a sunbathed afternoon at Rod Laver Arena.
Former champion Maria Sharapova put up a mid-match fight before bowing out of the Australian Open at the first hurdle, beaten 6-3 6-4 by Croatian Donna Vekic on Rod Laver Arena. Sharapova was clearly still hampered by the shoulder injury that had restricted her to one previous competitive outing since her opening-round exit at last year’s U.S. Open.
Second seed Novak Djokovic was forced to work hard by unwavering German Jan-Lennard Struff in his first match before prevailing 7-6(5) 6-2 2-6 6-1 to stay on course for a record-extending eighth title at Melbourne Park. Defending champion Djokovic got off to a strong start for a 5-2 lead in the opening set but the German world number 37 fought back to level things at 5-5 before going down in a closely-fought tiebreaker.
