A committee appointed to provide relief to the victims of ragging at universities and higher educational institutions

A committee to provide relief to the victims of ragging has been appointed. Minister Bandula Gunawardena has informed the committee to provide him the report within 90 days.

A large number of students give up education annually due to ragging at universities and higher educational institutions. There are reports of hospitalizations due to physical and mental abuse and becoming totally disabled and also committing suicides at universities. 30,000 students are annually admitted to the national university system. Another 20,000 students get enrolled at foreign universities due to ragging. It has been found that the country lose about 50 billion rupees annually due to this situation. The committee appointed by the higher Education Minister includes former Supreme Court Judge Dr. Saleem Marzook, former Vice Chancellor Prof. Narada Warnasuriya, venerable Prof. Maagammana Pagnananda thera, Rev. Father Dr. Benette Shantha Fernando, former vice Chancellor Dr. Chandra Embuldeniya and President’s Counsel Prasantha Lal de Alwis. During a media briefing at the Government Information Department today, Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that Deputy Chairperson of the University Grants Commission, Prof. Janithaa Liyanage has been appointed as the convener and the Secretary to the Commission.
