Ranjan Ramanayake’s bail application rejected

The Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court today rejected a request by MP RanjanRamanayake’s lawyers to grant him bail. Meanwhile, the Court ordered four media institutions to hand over RanjanRamanayake’s audio clips to the Criminal Investigations Department.

Parliamentarian RanjanRamanayake, who is in remand custody over the incident, was produced in the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court today. He is to stand trial on charges of possessing unlicensed firearms and live ammunition.

A team of lawyers appearing on behalf of RanjanRamanayake has called on the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court to release him on bail as he has been arrested not in a legal manner.

Rejecting the request, Magistrate Harsha Pelpola stated that the Magistrate’s Court has the power to issue or receive a warrant for any offense committed.

His lawyers filed a bail application stating that a warrant could not be obtained by a magistrate court against Mr. RanjanRamanayake. Deputy Solicitor General DileepaPeiris said that the lawyer who had applied for the bail when Ramanayake was arrested had no right to make this request.

DileepaPeiris pointed out that RanjanRamanayake had been taken into custody after giving a lengthy evidence at the official residence of the Chief Magistrate.
