CCD launches another investigation against Ranjan Ramanayake

The Colombo Crimes Division has said that another investigation has been launched against MP Ranjan Ramanayake. He was accused of undermining the police officers when they went to arrest him. The CID has sought the advice of the Attorney General in this respect.
Police allege that police officers, who are state officials, were embarrassed and humiliated when they attempted to arrest Ranjan Ramanayake on a court warrant. The Police said that a separate investigation has been launched on the posting of a video clip displaying lighting incense and doing exercises when the Police Offices went to his official residence at Madiwela to apprehend him. It is the view of the Police that he had been misusing the appreciation he has received as an artiste as well as the mandate he has received from the public for five years.
Previously, when he was arrested, the act of kissing a police officer reflected the fact that he was playing a leading role in derogating public officials. The Colombo Crimes Division said that an investigation has also been carried out in this respect.
In the meantime, 10 special Police teams have been deployed to analyze the voice tapes containing telephone conversations of Ranjan Ramanayake. Each team comprises four members including an Assistant Superintendent of Police and an OIC. These voice tapes are due to be analyzed by the teams concerned separately once the Police receive copies of the voice tapes that have been directed to the Government Analyst. The computers required for this purpose have already been provided while the support of the Criminal Investigations Department will be used for this purpose. The Police said that they have to analyze more than 100 thousand voice tapes. Ten teams have been appointed as these voice tapes have to be analyzed quickly and accurately. These Police teams will be operative under the supervision of Senior DIG of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennekoon.
According to the police, Ranjan Ramanayake is due to be reported separately based on the Criminal Procedure Code if he had made undue influence on the judiciary, the Criminal Investigations Department and the Bribery Commission.
Meanwhile Ranjan Ramanayake was produced in the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court yesterday with respect to the controversial voice tape incidents. He was thereafter remanded until the 29th of this month. It was done under the charges of influencing the duties of Court Judges.
The Magistrate also ordered the Prisons Superintendent to direct Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake to the Government Analyst on the 23rd of this month for a voice test.
