Over 6000 families affected by floods in western Kenya

A government official said that over 6000 families in the town of Kisumu, in western Kenya, had been affected by flooding from heavy rains that began earlier in the week. Many local residents said they had no dry place to sleep and feared the flooding situation could worsen as they appealed for aid. Government agencies responded by urging residents to move as soon as possible to a rescue centre set up at a local secondary school. East Africa is experiencing abnormally heavy rains due to the Indian Ocean being warmer than usual. Floods, landslides and a cyclone have killed more than 1,200 people across east and southern Africa this year.
