Tsunami commemorated countrywide

A two-minute silence was held from 9.25 am to 9.27 am today in memory of those who died in the tsunami and various other disasters.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa also joined the two-minute silence today to mark the 15 years of the tsunami. It was at the Wijerama official residence.

It was in December 2005, the declaration of National Safety Day took   place on to commemorate those who lost their lives in the tsunami on 26 December. Thereafter it became an annual event. This year’s main event was held at the Pereliya Tsunami Monument at Thelwatta, Galle. The train No. 50 from Colombo to Matara stopped near the Pereliya Jinaratana College and the officers of the company paid homage to the victims of the Pereliya train accident. Thereafter religious observances were conducted to commemorate the dead and bestow merits on them.

Many people in the Eastern Province also lost their lives due to the tsunami. The tsunami killed 1800 people in the Batticaloa district. The main event was held at the Nawaladi Tsunami Monument. Relatives of the dead lit candles and remembered them.

A total of 167 people was killed in the Thotamuna area in Matara during the tsunami. Villagers and relatives held a commemorative event in memory of them. It was held near the tsunami monument.

A program to commemorate those who lost the tsunami was held in Kalutara too. It was organized by the Kalutara District Secretariat and the Disaster Management Unit. The group then marched to the Kalutara Bodhiya and held a two-minute silence in remembrance of the dead.

A Japanese cultural procession and a lantern march were held in Galle to commemorate the victims of the tsunami. The Perahera commenced from Unawatuna Rumassala Junction and religious ceremonies were held at the Maagalla Japanese Language School.
