Inclement Weather to continue

The Met Department forecasts more showers in the Island today and tomorrow.

The Sluice gates of the Kala Wewa have been opened 18 feet in the face of the heavy rain. It generates 33 000 cubic feet of water per second. As a result Anuradhapura, Galnewa, and Hurigaswewa areas have gone under water and the navy has taken measures to rescue the displaced. Meanwhile, several houses at Ambewela Wawick Estate in Welimada area are at risk of landslide. Welimada Divisional Secretary Chaminda Weerasinghe stated that 225 persons belonging to 48 families have been evacuated for safe places. Measures have also been taken to provide them with food and other necessities. The sluice gates of Parakrama Samudra were opened due to the heavy rains. With the overflow of Mahaweli River, the historic Somawathi sacred area is inundated with about 10 feet of water. In the meantime, devotees were intimated not to visit Somawathi Sacred site until further notice.

The sluice gates of the Rajangana Reservoir in Anuradhapura have also been opened. Several roads including Kala Wewa Road and Gale-Newa Road in Hiripitiyagama have been inundated. Meanwhile, State Minister Duminda Dissanayake inspected the affected people in the area yesterday. Nearly 400 houses are inundated due to heavy rains in the Moneragala District.

The Sella Kataragama Ganadevi Devalaya and the Lakshmi Devalaya are also inundated. Former Chief Minister of Uva Province Shashindra Rajapakse visited these areas and looked into the situation. Steps have been taken to evacuate 11 families from Rakampane village in pallebowala , Gal-newa in Hanguranketha Police area due to landslide occurred early this morning. Traffic has been temporarily suspended following a fall of a massive earth mound in Imbulpe Nunperiel Nanrak Road. As a result , 45 families have been effected.
