President assures that media freedom will not be affected during his tenure

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has assured that media freedom will not be affected during his tenure. The President said that he hoped that the media institutions would take measures to fulfill their responsibilities towards the country.
The discussion between the media heads and the President was held at the Presidential Secretariat.
Addressing the gathering, President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said any reasonable criticism would be allowed during his tenure. However, the President also requested the media not to bring disrepute to the nation by ignoring the responsibilities of the media. He noted that he was elected as the President with many aspirations.
Increasing efficiency of politicians and government officials, eradicating corruption and economic development are among them. The President said he is hopeful for the assistance of media in this endeavour. President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa stated that the media is vested with a vital responsibility of uplifting the image of the country, as it is also crucial in economic development. The President commended the local media for the behaviour in the face of Swiss embassy staffer case. The President expressed his concern at the attempts made by international media to unnecessarily highlight the issue. He further noted that the local media is capable of amending the misconceptions passed onto the international communities.
Speaking about the trends of urban beautification, the President said that it was not driven by anyone but rather a creative initiative taken by the youth who love the country. He also stated that the media should continue to contribute towards the encouragement of this initiative.
Heads of media institutions representing electronic and printed media took part in the meeting.
