Buddhist devotees island wide mark Unduwap Poya day

Today is the Uduvap full moon Poya day.  Unduvap Poya commemorates the arrival of Sangamitta Theri in Sri Lanka with a Bo sapling from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in India under the direction of Emperor Dharmasoka.

Queen Anula and a group of Sri Lankan women were ordained by Sangamitta theri and established the order of Bhikkuni in Sri Lanka on an Uduvap full moon Poya day. The Sri Paada Pilgrimage season also began on this Poya Day.  Various religious programs have been organized at temples throughout the island to commemorate the full moon Poya day. A large gathering of devotees was witnessed in Buddhist temples island-wide. The ITN media network took measures to bring the Savanak Res monthly program from the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi premises in Anuradhapura under the instruction of the Atamasthanadhipathi Ven Pallegama Sirinivasa Thera. A special religious program to invoke blessing to the country was held this afternoon. The all night Pirith Chanting will conducted tonight.  Steps have been taken to telecast the Pirith chanting program live over the ITN.  Meanwhile, the Sasanaloka program organized by ITN FM every Poya day was also held at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi premises. Dhamma books were presented to the Samanera Theros who are studying at the Pirivena and the parents of them were felicitated.

The 192nd Dhamma Sermon under the Ama Dam Sisilasa program was delivered at Temple Trees by Venerable Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero of Kirulapone Allan-mathiniyaramaya. The Ama Dam Sisilasa program commenced on Esala Poya day of the year 2004. This series of sermons was held continuously at Carlton House in Tangalle with the objective of creating a morally bound and just society. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and several others were present at the occasion.

Meanwhile, an alms-giving ceremony was held at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi premises in Anuradhapura with the aim of invoking blessings on President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the entire country. This alms giving was held for the 8th time for the devotees who observed Sila before the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya under the guidance of Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Pallegama Sirinivasa Thero. Sudath Siriwardena of Japan and Anil Priyanthagama have sponsored the event. State Minister Shehan Semasinghe and several other public representatives participated in the event.
