Navy marks its 69th Anniversary

Established in 1937 as the Sri Lanka Volunteer Navy, the Navy was absorbed into the British Royal Navy as the Sri Lanka Royal Volunteer Sub Service after World War II.
After gaining independence, a permanent navy was established on December 9, 1950 and when Sri Lanka became a Republic in 1972 it was renamed the Sri Lanka Navy.
Launched with a very limited fleet and several vessels, the Sri Lanka Navy is now equipped with high-tech surveillance ships and advanced operating systems.
The Sri Lanka Navy had been actively involved in many humanitarian operations as the first defence line making an active contribution.
The Sri Lanka Navy is also responsible for protecting the land as well as safeguarding the economic oceans which is about large than the land area.
Whenever there is a natural disaster in the country, the service rendered by the Sri Lanka Navy in fulfilling the needs of the people has come in for praise locally as well as by foreign countries.
The Sri Lanka Navy is celebrating its 69th anniversary today within such a dignified path.
