Elections Chief clarifies the voting process

Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has made certain clarifications with respect to the Presidential election.

Mahinda Deshapriya called on the voters to carry along with them their valid identity cards to exercise their franchise in addition to their official poll cards. This would facilitate the voter as well as the officials on election duty. If your identity card number or the name is incorrectly mentioned due to a printing error, it will not be an obstacle to cast the vote. Any voter at the polling booth should remove their sun glasses or anything covering their faces to consolidate their identity to the officials. No person would be permitted to take photographs or video within the polling booth sans the written permission of the Returning Officer. Only the Senior Elections Officer or an official who has been granted permission can use the mobile phone.

The Elections Commissioner said that complaints have been received that problems had surfaced with regard to the granting of leave for private sector employees to cast their votes. At least a period of four to five hours should be given for any voter to cast their votes, as mentioned in the law. Also if the polling booth of a certain voter is located at a considerable distance from the place of work, a day’s paid leave, or one and a half days paid leave or two days paid leave should be granted. Complaints have been received that false statements, hate statements and announcements promoting a candidate and various photographs are being published in the social media.

The Elections Chief said that if this situation continued to prevail, he informed that action would have to be taken to obstruct the social media.
