East German vintage cars get their engines raring on anniversary of Berlin Wall fall

Hundreds of vintage car fans gathered in Modlareuth to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with a historic cruise in East German retro vehicles. The revellers symbolically opened a gate at the border former crossing at Moedlareuth, a village that previously straddled East and West between the states of Thuringia and Bavaria, and then drove through 65 Trabants and other vehicles once driven in the former German Democratic Republic. Some fifty years later, the boxy vehicle which was jokingly called ‘plastic and elastic’, has become the focus of a cheap-chic hot rod culture in Germany and can be found as souvenirs in various forms.
