Another two stages of the Expressway are opened

The third and the fourth stages of the Southern Expressway project were opened today. Remarkably, no politicians were present on the occasion.
The stretch from Barawakumbuka to Mattala Airport and Hambantota harbour was vested with the public by Secretary of the Road Development Ministry Sunil Hettiarachchi and Chairman of the Road Development Authority Nihal Sooriyarachchi.
A 15 kilometer segment from Wetiya to Andarawewa was built under the third phase while the fourth phase of the Expressway project was a 25 kilometer segment from Andarawewa to Mattala, Hambantota. The Southern expressway project was carried out with a loan assistance of the Exim bank of China. The estimated expenditure exceeded 103 billion rupees. The expressway consists of 4 lanes.
There are facilities to add another two lanes to the Expressway. There are eight interchanges for this stretch of the expressway. They are located at Godagama, Aparekka, Beliatta, Kahagalla, Angunukolapelessa, Wetiya, Sooriyawewa and Andarawewa. With the extension of the Southern Expressway up to Mattala, the total distance from Kottawa is 222 kilometres. Accordingly it takes two hours and thirty minutes to travel from Colombo to Hambanthota. The travelling time from Colombo to Kataragama is three hours and thirty minutes.
The launch of this expressway project will grant many economic benefits to the country. A majority state that this is a massive stride taken in the local transport sector.
