The Netherlands says democratic countries commend Sri Lanka for free and democratic election system

Netherlands Foreign Minister Stef Blok says that the democratic countries have commended Sri Lanka for being able to continue with free and democratic election system even amidst challenges. Mr. Blok said this when he met President Maithripala Sirisena. Netherlands Foreign Minister Stef Blok who is on a tour in Sri Lanka met President Maithripala Sirisena at the President’s House. They have held lengthy discussions on bilateral and regional affairs.

The President informed the Netherlands Foreign Minister that he will stay neutral at the presidential election. He further said that he can guarantee that the election will be peaceful, democratic and without corruption. The President said that as the armed forces and police are under him, he has directed them to assist in conducting an impartial and independent election by maintaining law and order in the country. Discussions have also been held on getting the support of Netherlands to increase liquid milk production in Sri Lanka. During the discussions the Netherlands Foreign Minister pointed out the need to strengthen cooperation against terrorist activities.
