Watch the world’s steepest downhill running race

Fearless runners gathered on an atrocious Kitzbuehel day to try tame one of Austria’s most iconic ski slopes, the Streif, on Hahnenkamm mountain for the second edition of the inov-8 Descent Race.

With a daunting gradient of 80%, the rainy weather made for a muddy and slippery 350-metre course, part of which is dubbed the world’s steepest and toughest descent. With a combined time of 1-minute 55.32 seconds over two runs, Markus Wiltschnigg took home the men’s honours and a €300 cheque, despite falling and injuring his shoulder with the finish line in sight.

In the women’s category, 23-year-old medical student Carina Polzer, from Innsbruck, bolted down in a combined time of 2 minutes 43.64 seconds for victory.
