Panda born on eve of China’s 70th National Day receives fitting name

A panda baby born on the eve of China’s 70th National Day has been fittingly named “Guoqing”, which literally translates to “national celebration” in honor of the occasion. Panda mother Meiqing from the Chimelong Safari Park in south China’s Guangdong Province gave birth at 13:50 on September 30, a day before China’s grand 70th anniversary. Guoqing’s gender so far remains a mystery though as Meiqing is very protective of the newborn, always cradling the tiny cub in her arms.

Zookeepers are comfortable leaving the newborn with its mother for now, however, as Meiqing’s parenting skills are proven. In 2013 she gave birth to ‘Longlong’, the first panda born in the southeast China region, and then gave birth again in 2016, this time to a pair of panda babies named “Qinqin” and “Aiai”.
