Adverse weather continues

The Met Department announces that Prevailing showery condition over the island is expected to continue during next few days. Showers or thundershowers will occur over most parts of the island.
Very heavy falls about 100-150 millimeters are likely at some places in Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Western provinces. Fairly heavy falls above 75 millimeters are likely at some places in North-western, Northern, Uva and Eastern provinces. The Department of Irrigation states that the water level of many major rivers has been decreasing, though higher levels of water were reported. However, the department stated that there is a risk of rising to the water level again due to the torrential rains.
Nilwala river and Kiramara Oya are spilled due to heavy rains in the Matara District. The Akuressa – Siyambalagoda and Akuressa – Kamburupitiya roads have been inundated due to overflowing of the Nilwala River. Due to the spill of the Kamburupitiya Lenabatuwewa tank several low lying areas have been submerged. Meanwhile, several areas in the Galle District have also been affected by the adverse weather. The Disaster Management Center has warned residents in the vicinity of the Gin Ganga to be vigilant as the water levels of it is also on the rise.
Meanwhile, the Akuressa / Kadduwa and Athuraliya areas have been flooded due to bad weather. According to our reporters, many roads and low lying areas were affected in those areas. As a result the Matara Disaster Management Unit has taken steps to widen the Nilwala River estuary from the Thotamuna area.
With the heavy rains, the water level of the Kelani River has risen rapidly. Traffic has been disrupted due to the flooding in the Hanwella and Pahawela areas. Heavy rainfall is also experienced in most parts of the Northern Province. The drought situation in the Vavuniya districted has ended after several months.
