The Esala Perahera festival of the historic Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya declared as a National Festival

President Maithripala Sirisena has declared the Esala Perahera festival of the historic Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya as a National Festival yesterday.

The final Randoli Perahera of the Sabaragamuwa Saman Maha Devalaya was held in a grand scale last night. The President who engaged in religious practices first, met the chief monk of Sripadasthanaya Venerable Bengamuwe Dhammadinna Thero thereafter. After the meeting the President made the declaration making the annual Esala festival of the historic Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya, a national festival. The Esala Perahera of the Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya is a festival with many cultural traditions. The Esala Perahera is based on the God Sumana Saman and many traditions in the country have been included later in the procession. Steps have been taken to make it a national festival under the guidance of the President while protecting cultural values and for the success as a national festival. Basnayaka Nilame of the Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya Migara Jayasundara presented the President with a memento to mark the occasion. Governor of the Sabaragamuwa Province Dhamma Dissanayake also presented a token of appreciation to the President.
