Tongan Prime Minister Pohiva, 78, dies in New Zealand

Tongan Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva, who was being treated for pneumonia at a hospital in Auckland, has died.Pohiva, 78, was medevaced to Auckland Hospital on Wednesday, Radio New Zealand said.The news was confirmed by an information ministry official, although the prime minister’s office could not immediately be reached for comment.The Tongan parliament has been deferred indefinitely as a result, media said. Born on April 7, 1941, Samiuela Akilisi Pohiva was the first commoner to be elected as the Prime Minister of Tonga rather than being appointed to the position by the King of Tonga and served as the Pacific island nation’s prime minister from 2014.In the first Tongan democratic elections in 2010, Pohiva led his pro-democracy political party, the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands (DPFI) to a landslide win. However, Pohiva lost in the premiership election to the nobles’ representative Lord Tuivakano — who went on to become prime minister.
