Taipei zoo celebrates panda pair’s 15th birthday

Taipei Zoo on Friday celebrated the 15th birthday of two giant pandas, which were gifted to Taiwan by the Chinese mainland in 2008. The zoo prepared two specially made ice cakes decorated with seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as kiwis, chestnuts, pineapples and carrots, with the addition of several ice “balloons” on bamboo sticks and a cute little panda-shaped ice sculpture.

Sugar cane was used to make the number 15, marking the 15th birthday for Yuan Yuan and Tuan Tuan, which turn 15 two days later. The birthday party for the panda pair attracted a large number of fans, who crowded the zoo’s giant panda exhibition hall.

According to Wang Yimin, curator of the zoo’s special exhibition hall, this year’s cakes for Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan were designed around an amusement park theme. She added that the cake was also designed with auspicious symbols to wish the female Yuan Yuan good luck in conceiving more offspring.
