Report of the Presidential Commission on Sri Lankan Air Lines, Sri Lankan Catering and Mihin Lanka will be tables in Parliament

The cabinet of Ministers has decided to table the report compiled by the Presidential Commission appointed on inquiring discrepancies taken place at the Sri Lankan Air Lines, Sri Lankan Catering and Mihin Lanka, in Parliament.

The report on Sri Lankan Air Lines, Sri Lankan Catering and Mihin Lanka has given 32 recommendations. The cabinet approval was given to forward the report to the Attorney General to take legal action in accordance with the recommendations.

Meanwhile, the cabinet approval has also been granted to increase fines imposed on offences categorized under the penal code. The cabinet gave the approval to proposal to draft the relevant law pertaining to the increase of fines. The measure had been taken by the government with the view of discouraging wrongdoings in the society and curb certain crimes. It has been identified that the fines imposed on many offences are outdated and needed to be updated.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to construct 2,000 housing units for the low income families. The new housing units will be constructed in Moratuwa, Peliyagoda, Thimbiri-gas-yaya and Maharagama under the Chinese funds. The cabinet of Ministers gave their approval to acquire lands for the proposed projects. The government has also decided to reconstruct Hindu religious places in the Northern and Eastern Provinces that were affected by the war.

Meanwhile, the cabinet approval was also granted to amend several acts on taxes. Accordingly, VAT, Nation Development Tax, Inland Revenue Act and Finance Act will be amended.

The cabinet approval was also given to obtain financial support to construct a Vocational Training Institute in Matara.
