Sprint and slosh: runners vs regurgitation in Berlin beer race

Dozens of runners took part in the Berlin Beer Mile to find that their toughest enemy was not the other runners, but their own stomachs. The Berlin Beer Mile is a series of races in which runners take four laps and are expected to drink a beer between each lap. Like in a regular race, the fastest is the winner. The hardest part is not throwing up. The penalty for vomiting which race rules euphemistically call “a reverse” is an extra lap. Runners from several different countries took part, including Germany, Australia and Canada. The racing rules are strict. A tester checks each can and bottle to make sure that it’s actually beer inside before the races. Beer Mile races take place around the world. To date, there have been over 7,000 races.
