NASA’s TESS satellite discovers ‘super earth’ planet

NASA’s discovery of a star named GJ 357 has uncovered new worlds orbiting the star, one of which is a potentially habitable planet.

The super planet, called GJ 357 d, was discovered in February 2019, by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, a planet-hunting orbital telescope designed to detect exoplanets. Located in the star’s habitable zone, the exoplanet receives about the same amount of stellar energy from its star as Mars does from the Sun. At 31 light years away, the planet weighs at least 6.1 times Earth’s mass, and orbits the star every 55.7 days. Scientists will now have to determine the density of the super planet’s atmosphere. If dense enough it could trap sufficient heat to warm the planet and allow liquid water on its surface.
