Runners race up Bolivia’s high-altitude ‘Highway of Death’

The eighth annual Bolivian Skyrace was held with racers from around the world taking part in a gruelling uphill climb along Bolivia’s infamous ‘Highway of Death.’ Bolivia’s Skyrace is one of the world’s most difficult races with participants climbing some 2,100 meters over a 28 kilometres distance. The race winds along the sides of mountains rising from the Bolivian Amazon and ends at a finish line 3,200 metres above sea level. Since it was built in 1932 by Paraguayan prisoners of the Chaco War, the ‘Highway of Death’ has been the scene of some 300 traffic accidents. It was carved in the stone and passes through areas where waterfalls flow. The highway is no longer open to automotive traffic due to its deadly history.
