Lankan held with Saudi Riyals worth millions of rupees

A Sri Lankan passenger has been detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport for attempting to smuggle out Saudi riyals worth 8.93 million rupees to Chennai, India. Customs Media Spokesman Sunil Jayaratne said that the suspect was arrested at the departure terminal of the airport last evening by the Customs officers attached to the Katunayake International Airport.

The Customs Media Spokesman said that the suspect was identified as a 23-year-old businessman from Vavuniya, who frequents flights between India and Sri Lanka.

The contraband worth 190,000 Saudi riyals was seized from the suspect’s backpack. Investigations on the matter were conducted by the Customs officials. It is reported that the suspect was ordered to pay a fine of 100,000 rupees.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Navy has succeeded in recovering 70 kilogrammes of beedi leaves from the Battalangunduwa Coast. The recovery was made during a search operation carried out the Northwestern Naval Command. These were wrapped in two parcels. The Navy said that the Northwestern Naval Commander during operations carried out in the past few days had succeeded in recovering 1200 kilogrammes of beedi leaves.
