Algeria fans celebrate, Senegalese disappointed after Africa Cup of Nations final

The final whistle of the Africa Cup final provoked wild celebrations among the large contingent of Algeria fans in Cairo late last night. It was a fitting end to a tournament that, with 24 teams for the first time, produced plentiful drama even if quality was sometimes lacking. While Algerian fans celebrated on Cairo streets their Senegalese counterparts mourned after a freak second-minute goal gave the North African country a 1-0 win.

The game got off to an extraordinary start when Bounedjah collected the ball, burst forward and unleashed a shot that took a deflection off Sane. The match comes just over a year after Senegal narrowly failed to advance from the group stage in the World Cup in Russia and 17 years after they were beaten on penalties by Cameroon in the 2002 African Cup of Nations final.
