‘There’s no 7-Eleven on the moon to supply you with spare parts’

It has been a half-century since Neil Armstrong stepped out of a lunar module and onto the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969 and declared, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” The moment heralded a golden age of space exploration that was set in motion just eight years earlier in 1961, when President John F. Kennedy promised before Congress to put a man on the moon before the decade was out.Garden City, New York’s Cradle of Aviation Museum curator Joshua Stoff explained why the 50th anniversary of the moon landing on Saturday (July 20) is so significant.Former employees of Grumman, all of them current docents at the museum, recounted what it was like to work on Apollo 11’s lunar module, or the LM-5. Grumman won the contract to build the LM-5.
