Mega Water Project in Matara

The fourth stage of the Matara Water Supply Project has been launched. The entire project is to cost 18,200 million rupees.

Construction of a Water Pumping Plant and a Purification Plant in the Malimbada area in Katurangoda in Matara was launched under the guidance of Minister Sagala Ratnayake and Acting Ministers Lucky Jayawardena and Buddhika Pathirana. Work on the Project is due to be completed by the year 2022. Noteworthy is the ability of the Project to provide water not only to Matara but also to part of the Hambanthota District.

Minister Sagala Ratnayake said that everyone was criticizing them after 2015 referring to Yahapalanaya. It was due to this good governance that they have received strength. As they gradually strengthened the economy, they are able to undertake such development pogrammes. They worked in the last three years. Its results are now visible.  Another stage of the work is being launched.  He said that they were working on a programme to strengthen the economy. Their intention is also to strengthen the economy of the people.

Acting Minister Lucky Jayawardena said that the drinking water needs of the country was 42 percent from 2015. But if it is increased to 50 percent at present it could be further increased in rhe years to come. As such in this respect mega schemes are now being launched.
