Midwives use AR to deliver virtual babies in simulated births

Midwifery students at London’s Middlesex University are learning to bring new life into the world in a radically new way, thanks to the use of augmented reality technology. Using AR headsets alongside lifelike models of full-term mothers, trainee midwives can take part in fully simulated births, which the university’s clinical staff hope will both hone their clinical skills and leave them better prepared to face clinical difficulties rarely seen in day-to-day practice. Midwifery educator Sarah Chitongo told Reuters that a major benefit of the AR system is that it allows students to gain a better understanding of the birthing process by displaying an interactive representation of a patient’s anatomy.
