Seaplanes to e-planes – Canadian airline to use electric engines

Engineers in the U.S. and Canada are racing to build the world’s first electric-powered commercial airline. Vancouver-based Harbour Air Seaplanes is looking to U.S. electric engine-maker magniX to power its 40-strong fleet. The 750 horsepower magni500 electric motors are due to be used in the airline’s six-passenger de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver planes.

The first engine is due to be installed in July with its maiden test flight scheduled for November. Harbour Air Seaplanes hopes to be using the engines to carry passengers by 2022. The CEO of MagniX said there is a large market for short, electric-powered journeys. Stringent safety parameters mean magniX has designed the engine in segments meaning if one or more parts of the engine fail, its can still have power and be landed safely.

MagniX engineers are also working on reducing weight and making sure the new engine does not change the flight characteristics of the plane.
