Missouri farming community under water as Mississippi river keeps a steady rise

Businesses and farming communities in West Alton, Missouri brace for the worst as floodwaters from the Mississippi river, already covering tops of levees, threaten to crest at least 36 feet. The small farming community was evacuated earlier in the week and those that remain hope they won’t see a repeat of the historic flooding of 1993 when the Mississippi crested at roughly 49 feet in the St. Louis area. The worst affected are the region’s farmers already reeling from an excessively rainy season that prevented them from planting crops in spring.
