590 receive teacher appointments

Minister Akila Viraj Kriyawasam has said that even though the voucher scheme was introduced ending the school uniform mafia, he had been summoned to the Presidential Commission. He expressed this view at a function held in Battaramulla.
The function was organized to hand over letters of appointment to those who were recruited as development officials under the programme of granting jobs to graduates, and now affiliated to the Sri Lanka Teacher Service. 590 received their letters of appointment.
Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that it is planned to grant 22,000 jobs for graduates and five thousand have already been granted appointments. Of the 10,000 schools in the island there were 4000 Principals. He said that they could have given actin appointments or political appointments. He mentioned that there was a mafia in the granting of school uniform when he became the Education Minister. Instead a voucher Scheme was introduced. He said that he has been summoned to the Presidential Commission as to why vouchers were given instead of uniforms.
Also he is being queried as to why the Education Minister’s message was printed in the text books. In the past years not only the Minister’s but the President’s photo was published. They were being attacked from several directions. The granting of tabs to school children was also an issue for them.
The Education Minister further said that some attempted to keep the schools closed during the past, but he took a bold decision considering the future of the children.
The Education Minister said that some persons wanted the schools to b kept closed for a long period. But they took a bold decision to open the schools placing the trust in the Security Forces. 30 thousand million hours are being lost for the children if the schools are kept close for one day. He said that dedications were being made considering the education of the children.
A group including State Minister for Education Vijayakala Maheshwaran joined in the occasion.
