President instructs to accelerate Mahaweli development projects

President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered the officials to expeditiously complete all development projects related to the Mahaweli and pass on its benefits to the people. The President gave these instructions during the progress review meeting of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment.

The President inquired into the progress of irrigation projects including the Uma Oya, the Minipe Ela, the Wayamba Ela and the Upper Elahera. The President said that these projects should be completed before the scheduled dates and pass on the benefits to the people. The President referred to taking initiatives to further upgrade the contribution made by the Mahaweli to the economy of the country and also on new projects.

The President made inquiries on the situation of the projects that are being implemented to enhance the forest density giving priority to tree planting.
The President drew his attention to the Moragahakanda Kaluganga development project and its future initiatives. It was announced at this discussion that a direct income of 1100 million rupees had been earned during the last 12 months through the generation of power from the power plant operative from the Moragahakanda Kaluganga Multipurpose Project.

The President said that he was always reminding about tree planting as it brings many benefits.State Minister Ajith Manapperuma mentioned that they were discussing about enhancing the forest density. At the district level they have identified 80,000 lands for cultivation. They planned to cultivate in September and in October 12,000 hectares, but the figure had come down to 2000 as funds were not received for the project.
The President said that funds were not an issue. One is reforestation and the other is cultivation. He said that he can find any amount of funds. Planting cannot be stopped saying that there are no funds.
