Polls open in Australia’s general election

Polls opened at 8 a.m. on Saturday  for Australia’s general election, where voters will decide to either extend the six-year rule of the centre-right Liberal-National Coalition or elect the main opposition party, the centre-left Australian Labor Party.Australian bookies predict a return to power for the Labor party in the election after six years in the political wilderness and a campaign in which it has put climate change and tax reform at the top of its agenda.Prime Minister Scott Morrison has made economic management the centrepiece of the campaign for his conservative Liberal-National coalition, which has held power since 2013. He faces Labor leader Bill Shorten. Polls will close at 6 p.m.. Voting is compulsory in Australia and the result should be known on Saturday evening.
