AI and space tech helping fight bowel cancer

Artificial intelligence (AI) is helping doctors diagnose bowel cancer by analysing live colonoscopy video using technology developed to deliver data quickly between Earth and spacecraft up to millions of miles away.Odin Vision, a spin off from University College London, is developing a system that can identify cancerous growths or polyps from a video feed of a colonoscopy, diagnosing cancerous growths in realtime. The system relies on technology developed to enable fast, reliable communication between Earth and spacecraft and could finally ending what can be an agonising wait for a diagnosis. The team developed bespoke compression software and neural networks to create a cloud-based artificial intelligence system that can support doctors in their decision making.Connecting clinics and hospitals to the cloud also means AI could be accessed as effectively in rural communities as in major hospitals.Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths.
