No need to dive – Czechs unveil 3D cave mapping technology

Czech speleologists have come up with a way to explore flooded cave systems without strapping on scuba gear, wet suits, helmets and water-proof lamps: 3D mapping.

That means, of course, that somebody has to put on the gear and go into the cave, but only once and only long enough to film it, making exploration and mapping faster and less dangerous.

The new tool, which premiered last  Thursday , was developed by Geo-CZ, a company that uses the underlying technology to map historical and archaeological sites.

Equipped with cameras, a team of divers filmed inside the flooded Chynov cave.

The images were then analysed by specialists and stitched into a 3D animation using computers – a process known as ‘videogrammetry’.
