Detailed digital mapping technique could cut traffic jams

A system that can map roadside infrastructure in realtime and in more detail than ever before could help reduce the number of traffic jams caused by roadworks. The technology was developed by Mobileye for Britain’s national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey (OS), to create the first detailed map of all the poles, holes and signs that line the country’s roads and pavements. The system is based on Mobileye’s driver assistance system, enhanced to capture a street-level view of road markings, network boxes, traffic lights, road signs, lamp and telegraph posts, bollards, manhole covers, and drainage grates. Fleets of vans and cars fitted with Mobileye’s camera technology and will upload as they travel, processing and sending data to the cloud before the information is provided to OS who will cross-reference it with existing datasets.
