Federer cruises through in Madrid while Thiem also progresses

Roger Federer breezed through to the last 16 of the Madrid Open on his first clay-court appearance for three years as Richard Gasquet was brushed aside in straight sets. The Swiss has chosen to miss the clay-court season in recent years, but he showed no signs of rustiness on the red surface as he dismissed France’s Gasquet in just 52 minutes in the Spanish capital. Federer, who was playing for the first time in any ATP event since winning his 28th Masters 1000 title at the Miami Open in March, hit 28 winners throughout the match on his way to a 6-2 6-3 victory. The 37-year-old broke Gasquet twice in the opening set and then notched a solitary break in the second as he oozed class throughout.
