Baby lobsters reared in innovative sea-based system

A female lobster ‘hen’ can carry up to 40,000 eggs, depending on her size, though nearly all of these won’t survive in the wild; often being predated by other animals as they float around in the surface waters of the sea as plankton. As the most valuable fish caught in the UK, lobsters are also subject to fishing pressure and if not managed sustainably are vulnerable to stock collapse. In a bid to ensure these crustaceans remain plentiful in the waters around the Cornish coast scientists from the UK’s National Lobster Hatchery are working to supplement the natural fishery through a stock enhancement programme, and have developed a sea-based method to rear baby lobsters to larger sizes before release. The Lobster Grower project, they say, is the first of its kind to grow large numbers of European lobster suitable for release into the wild.
