Team Sri Lanka leave for World Cup without fanfare

They will have an extended training camp at Merchants Taylors’ School for 8 days before moving up north to play two ODIs against Scotland in Edinburgh on the 18th and 21st of May.Thereafter the Sri Lanka team will have two more warm-up fixtures against South Africa and Australia.

They will start their World Cup campaign on the 1st of June in Cardiff against 2015 World Cup runners-up, New Zealand.Usually when the national team departs for an ICC event, there’s much hype, excitement, hope and belief amongst everyone in the island. This time it’s completely the opposite. Understandably so, as the country is still recovering from the Easter Sunday Bombings, two weeks ago which killed over 250 people and wounded nearly 600.

The underperforming Sri Lanka team will have a great chance at redemption. They can put smiles on the faces of 21 million people if they play to their potential and at least compete against some stiff opposition, even if they do not win the World Cup.
