Special program for the welfare of provincial journalists

Minister Ruwan Wijewardena says a special program will be launched for the welfare of the provincial journalists. Sri Lanka has also improved on the world press freedom index. Assuming duties after Sinhala and Tamil New Year took place at the UNP office in Biyagama under the patronage of Minister Ruwan Wijewardena. Speaking on the occasion the Minister said that the government has taken many steps for the betterment of journalists. Meanwhile Sri Lanka has improved on the world press freedom index. According to the index of reports sans frontiers Sri Lanka has come forward by five places. Sri Lanka is on the 126h place among 180 countries. In 2014 Sri Lanka was at 165th place. During the past few years the country has gradually come up to 126th place.

They have appreciated the steps taken by the government including investigations in to the killing of Lasantha Wickrematunga and other incidents. The report also states that Sri Lanka could have come up to a better place if there was no pressure on media institutions and journalists with the political change occurred in October last year. Norway is in first place on world press freedom according to the index. India is on the 140th place, Bangladesh on 150th place and Pakistan on 142nd place.
