Bush fortress protects wildlife from poachers

This is no ordinary game park where Africa’s “Big Five” can be viewed. It is essentially a high-tech bush-fortress to protect wildlife from poachers.

Even with foot patrols along electrified fences, and spying from camouflaged outlook towers by anti-poaching crews, illegal incursions were still being made into parks.

In response to a huge spike in rhino poaching the Connected Conservation pilot project backed by technology firms Cisco and Dimension Data implemented a security ‘blanket’.

CCTV and long-range thermal cameras, sensors and a WiFi network across the 62,000 hectare reserve along the border of the world-famous Kruger National Park are all relatively new measures taken in an effort to reduce illicit activity.
