Djokovic survives scare in Monte Carlo, Cilic out

Novak Djokovic survived a scare against Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Monte-Carlo Masters to move into the last 16.

The world number one looked to be in cruise control when he took the first set, but his German rival fought back to take the second and set-up a tense deciding set on the clay.

Djokovic, who lost to Kohlschreiber in straight sets at the Indian Wells Masters earlier this year, saved 12 of the 16 break points he conceded during the match but also smashed his racket in frustration in the second set.

The Serb rallied in the final set to take the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Djokovic now moves on to face 21 year-old American Taylor Fritz in the round of 16.

In a repeat of their five-set encounter at Wimbledon 2018, Croatian Marin Cilic was beaten by Argentina’s Guido Pella 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
