South Korea to commemorate fifth anniversary of deadly ferry sinking

South Korea is set to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the ferry disaster which killed more than 300 people, most of them children. The Sewol, which was structurally unsound, overloaded and travelling too fast on a turn, capsized and sank during a routine voyage on April 16, 2014.Of those killed, 250 were teenagers on a school trip, many of whom obeyed crew instructions to remain in their cabins even as crew members were escaping the sinking vessel.South Korea completed a salvage operation of the ferry on April 11, 2017, which has been lying on its side at a depth of 44 metres, to search for the bodies of a remaining nine missing passengers. The government of Asia’s fourth-largest economy, with one of the world’s fastest ageing populations, has faced criticism in recent years over poor safety standards.
