Cholera vaccination campaign ends in post-cyclone Mozambique

Mozambique has concluded a successful six-day emergency cholera vaccination campaign that targeted around 900,000 people in four districts affected by Cyclone Idai. The oral vaccines were given to communities identified by the government as highest risk – those without access to safe water and sanitation – in Beira, Dondo, Nhamatanda and Buzi districts.Cyclone Idai smashed into Beira on March 14, unleashing catastrophic flooding and killing more than 700 people in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.Cholera is endemic to Mozambique, which has had regular outbreaks over the past five years. The World Health Organization says the disease is “a global threat”, and experts estimate there are between 1.3 and 4.0 million cases and between 21,000 and 143,000 cholera deaths worldwide each year.
