Earth, seen from space, is projected on a giant screen in NY

On a rainy in a vacant Lower East Side lot sandwiched between a Japanese restaurant and a 99-cent pizza place, lies a large, 20-foot LED screen showing a live-streamed image of earth taken from NASA satellite photos from space. The public art installation called “blu Marble,” was created by Sebastian ErraZuriz and pays homage to the iconic Apollo 17 “Blue Marble” picture of Earth taken by the crew in 1972.

The display also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. The artwork receives its data from a NASA weather satellite, which provides a variety of high resolution images that show cloud formations and various weather patterns.
