Indian PM Modi releases party’s election manifesto

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi released his Bharatiya Janata Party’s election manifesto ahead of the general polls that begin this week. Modi’s BJP is widely expected to retain power after a general election that starts this Thursday, though with a much smaller mandate, hit by concerns over a shortage of jobs and weak farm prices. BJP pledged to spend 100 trillion rupees on infrastructure in the next five years, to help create jobs for the millions entering the workforce each year. About 900 million people are eligible to vote in the election, in which Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party-led group is taking on the Congress and its allies and a clutch of regional parties.
