11-year-old composers have their music performed by the New York Philharmonic

Inside the prestigious walls of Lincoln Center in front of a crowd of hundreds, the famed New York Philharmonic performed music imagined and written by two 11-year-old composers.Paloma Dineli Chesky is in the 5th grade in New York City. She plays piano and sings. Dineli Chesky debuted a new song she wrote called ‘Rising.’ In addition to writing the lyrics, Dineli Chesky wrote each note for each instrument in the 106 person New York Philharmonic Orchestra.Eleven-year-old Mack Scocca-Ho, who is in the 6th grade and plays the viola and piano, also has his composition called ‘Ociantrose’ performed by the full orchestra.

The two gifted musicians are part of the New York Philharmonic’s ‘Very Young Composer’ program. Since 1995, the after-school class has developed the talents of hundreds of child composers.

The program engages children in the 4th and 5th grades, with or without musical backgrounds, and fosters their talent over the next few years. Dineli Chesky said she had only four weeks to compose her piece.
